Mandy came to visit the next afternoon, looking pretty in a deep purple long-sleeved dress and black heels. Greg had never been so happy to see anyone. He gave Adrian full credit for effort, but the man was a workaholic. Lying around made him grumpy and restless.

“I went out with some friends after church, so I came on over right after.” She hung her jacket beside the door. “I hope that’s okay.”

“Of course it is.” Greg hugged her, took her hand and led her into the living room. “How’ve you been?”

“All right. I’ll be glad when all this crap’s over, though. It’s stressful.” She lowered herself into the big chair with a contented sigh. “Hi, Adrian. How are you feeling?”

“Great. Feeling just fabulous.” Adrian aimed a loopy smile at Mandy. “How’re you?”

“Good, thank you.” She raised her eyebrows at Greg.

He grinned. “He had something for his headache about an hour ago. It makes him a little goofy.”

Adrian wrinkled his nose. “Not so much.”

“Doesn’t matter, as long as it makes your head feel better.” Greg gently touched the giant black-and-purple bruise covering the side of Adrian’s skull. “Mandy, you want a drink or anything?”

“No, thanks. I’m good.” Mandy watched with a worried crease digging between her eyes as Greg resumed his spot on the sofa beside Adrian. “Do they have any leads or anything? I gave them some hairs from Granny’s brush so they could distinguish her DNA from any others they found in the house. They seemed pretty confident that they could find who did it.”

“Seemed that way to me too.” Adrian sat up straight and peered at Mandy with the intensity the meds hadn’t diminished one bit. “Did they show you the picture?”

She nodded. “I didn’t know any of them, though. Hadn’t seen any of them around. So I wasn’t very helpful there.”

Greg shrugged. “Hey, it was a long shot. There’s no reason why you should have known any of those people.”

“They weren’t the ones who stole the cookie-jar money.”

Greg and Mandy both stared at Adrian. “What makes you say so?” Greg asked.

“They said they didn’t find the money.” Adrian frowned, as if he were having a hard time remembering. Which Greg figured he probably was. The doc had warned them that he might have trouble remembering things about the attack and the time immediately surrounding it. “When they came out of the house, one of them said something about not finding the money.” He glanced from Greg to Mandy and back again. “What else could they mean?”

Mandy sucked on her bottom lip. “Do you think they knew about the closet money?”

“Maybe. Who knows?” Greg rubbed his chin. “Either way, they didn’t find it.”

“Did you tell the police that?”

Adrian shook his head in answer to Mandy’s question. “I didn’t remember until now. I guess I’ll have to call and tell them.”

Across the room, Adrian’s pod started playing the theme song from the old TV show Cops. He pinned Greg with a baleful glare. “Really?”

Greg jumped up and bounded over to the hutch.
